Restricted free agent guard Odyssey Sims has re-signed with the Los Angeles Sparks, the team announced in a release Thursday.

Sims started 14 regular season games for the Sparks in 2017 after Essence Carson went down with a groin injury. Sims made the most of the opportunity, holding onto the role for the remainder of the season and through the playoffs. Sims and All-WNBA point guard Chelsea Gray give the Sparks great two-way play in the backcourt. Both players are just 25.

“I’m happy to announce that we have resigned Odyssey,” said Penny Toler, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Sparks, in Thursday’s release. “Her continued development and commitment to the team is going to be huge for our future success.”

Sims was acquired last offseason by the Sparks along with the No. 11 overall pick via Dallas in exchange for the No. 4 and No. 23 picks in the 2017 WNBA draft.

“We have some unfinished business to take care of and I can’t wait for this season,” Sims said in the team release. “Most importantly, I’m happy to be an LA Spark.”

Coming off of back-to-back WNBA Finals appearances, the Sparks made sure to retain Sims, one of the most important pieces of their 2017 run to the Finals. Sims averaged nearly 16 points and four assists per game for the Sparks, who were defeated in Game 5 of the WNBA Finals by the Minnesota Lynx at Williams Arena.

Sparks fans will now be eagerly awaiting news on 2017 Defensive Player of the Year Alana Beard. Beard is an unrestricted free agent. She will turn 36 next season, but as seen in her 2017 performance, the veteran has shown no signs of slippage.
