With the WNBA season opener just eight days away, we’ve got time to breakdown the odds to one more individual award: WNBA Defensive Player of the Year. We’ve written about the MVP race, as well as the contenders for Rookie of the Year, but we now turn the spotlight to an award dominated by three particular players.

Since 2009, the only winners of the WNBA DPOY award have been Tamika Catchings (’09, ’10, ’12), Brittney Griner (’14, ’15) and last year’s winner Sylvia Fowles (’11, ’13, ’16). With Catchings retiring after a 15-year career, Griner and Fowles are the only active players who have won the DPOY. With both players still playing at high levels on successful teams, they will both certainly still be in the mix for the award this season, but what exactly do the odds say? Let’s take a look.
